How to Use Herbal Blends in the Sauna

What Are Herbal Blends?

Whether eucalyptus leaves, chamomile blossoms, or lavender blossoms—one thing is certain: these medicinal herbs produce plenty of essential oils, which are released by heat (in tea or in the sauna) and absorbed through our nose and pores. When used correctly, the oils can have a positive effect on the human body and can also affect the mind.

In our last article, we already discussed the many ways to use sauna infusion concentrates with essential oils. Herbal blends—that is, loose herbs—can also be used in the sauna to benefit from the healing properties of herbs. They are not as highly concentrated as essential oils, but are considered gentler and easier to tolerate.

How Herbal Blends Work in a Bio Sauna

Depending on the type of sauna, the sauna cabin may have a special holder for the herbs. Use the so-called vaporizer pot for this purpose. To make sure this method is suitable for your sauna, contact an expert or check your sauna’s installation instructions. Another option for sauna heaters with a bio system is a special sieve on which you can spread the herbs loosely. Steam then passes through them, releasing their soothing fragrance into the sauna.Bio sauna vaporizer heater with chamomile blossoms on an herb sieve, white sauna stones
The principle behind this aromatherapy and inhalation is the same as with essential oils. Hot steam carries the plants’ healing substances and distributes them throughout the sauna cabin. They are absorbed through pores opened by the heat and inhaled through the nose. The effect varies depending on the herbal blend, but is always relaxing.

How to:

  1. Fill the vaporizer pot, usually made of stainless steel, with water. Depending on its size, it will hold up to about one liter.

  2. Now add your preferred herbal blend to the sieve secured inside the pot, where it will sit just above the water.

  3. Hang the vaporizer pot with the herbs over the sauna heater. Make sure to keep it 20 cm away from the heat source so the herbs do not overheat.

  4. If using a special sieve on the bio sauna heater, scatter the herbs loosely over the sieve so the steam can pass through them properly.

  5. We recommend choosing herbal blends or mixing herbs to benefit from the combined effects of their healing properties. A single scent may also be too overpowering.

  6. Choose according to your mood and needs:
  • Pre-made herbal blends for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.

  • Eucalyptus leaves for a refreshing and antiseptic effect. The oil they contain may help loosen mucus, especially when you have a cold.

  • Chamomile blossoms for an antibacterial effect. The blossoms may be particularly effective at reducing inflammation and relieving cramps.

  • Lavender blossoms to promote wound healing and care for your skin and hair. Lavender may also have a calming, relaxing effect and help you sleep soundly.

  • Lemongrass to strengthen the immune system and combat rheumatism. Its pleasant, refreshing scent may also be invigorating and uplifting.

  • Lemon balm leaves for headaches. Their special mineral salts and tannins may help combat viruses.

  • Peppermint leaves for muscle and nerve pain. Peppermint may help loosen mucus and combat inflammation of the oral mucosa. It may also improve concentration and relieve flatulence.

  • Rose blossoms to relieve cramps and help heal minor skin injuries such as insect bites, while reducing itching and swelling.

  • Rosemary leaves for mild circulatory problems and rheumatism. The leaves may promote circulation and gently stimulate the skin.

  • Thyme leaves to kill germs in cases of respiratory problems as well as bladder and stomach inflammation. The herbs may strengthen the immune system and support cell protection.

Conclusion

Herbal blends, essential oils, or salts can be used for aromatherapy in saunas to promote health benefits. It does not matter whether you have a Finnish sauna or a bio sauna: heat releases the active ingredients in the herbs, which are absorbed through your skin and nose. Choose the blend that suits you and start steaming!
